School
Education System
The education system in spain is divided into 6 main parts. The first 6 years parents
can put their children into the Preschool (Educacion infantil), but that's not a
obligatory part. The obligatory part starts at the age of 6, when the children visit
the Primary School (Educacion Primaria). This are 6 years of school, so until the
age of 12. After that the Secondary School (Educacion Secundaria Obligatoria) starts.
This takes 4 years, so that the students have reached the age of 16 after it. This
is now the age where the obligatory part of the education is finished. Now they
can choose between working (Formacion Profesional) or do a Bachillerato, which takes
another two years. After the Bachillerato the students can enter University (Universidad).
Preschool Education - Educación Infantil
The first part of the education system in spain is the preschool (Educación infantil).
It is separated in two cycles, the first one for childrens between 1 and 3 years,
and the second one for children between 4 and 6 years. This whole part is voluntary.
There public and private centers, where children can obtain preschool education.
Primary School - Educación Primaria
The Primary School is an educational period, that includes six academic years, which
are arranged between the age of 6 and 12 years of the children. This period is separated
in 3 cycles, of which every one contains two academic years. They are arranged in
different areas. The first one is the knowledge about the natural, social and cultural
environment. Further areas are the education of art and the physical education.
Furthermore the spanish language and literature, and if given the second official
language. And they have to learn one foreign language and, of course, maths. There
is a evaluation in every area after every cycle. If someone don't pass the evaluation,
there is the possibility to expand the cycle by one year. This can only be obtained
once in the Primary School.
Secondary school - Educación Secundaria Obligatoria
The period of Secondary School Education is situated between the age of 12 and 16
years, and is divided in four courses. In the first three courses the following
subjects are tought. Science of natur and social, geographic and historic science
are tought. Other courses are physical education, music and the spanish language
and literature, and again if given the second official language, as in Valencia
for example valenciano. There is tought maths, technologies, and one foreign language.
And at last visual and plastic art is an subject, too. This are the first three
courses, in the fourth year there are added ethic and civic education. And they
have to choose three other subjects. For example latin or another second foreign
language or computer science. There is a evaluation after every course in every
subject. If someone don't pass two or more subjects, he has to do a extraordinary
test, and if he still don't pass the subjects, he has to repeat the whole course.
This can only be done once in every course. After these part the students have reached
the age of 16 and so can now choose either to access the Bachillerato or to start
working.
Bachillerato
The ones who decide to do the Bachillerato have to go to school two more years.
They have to choose one of three branches. The branches are: Arts, Sciences and
technologies or humanities and social sciences. The Bachillerato is formed by general
subjects, subjects of the branch and elective courses. The evaluation is continous.
If the student don't pass mroe than two subjects in the first year, he has to repeat
it. If a student don't pass more than three subjects in the second year he has to
repeat it, too. The time a student is in the Bachillerato can not exceed four years.
To get the title Bachiller, the student needs to pass all subjects and to pass the
Prueba General de Bachillerato (General Test). With the title Bachiller, the student
can now go to university.
