Statistics about university in spain
Graduates
The number of graduates in spain has doubled in the last 30 years. Nowadays female
students are more than male students. With a studying quota of 38% spain is much
better than germany. While the importance of international experience and knowing
different languages is rising, in spain the most popular countries for studying
abroad are Italy, France, Great Britain and on fourth place Germany. For german
students, however, spain is one of the most popular countries to study abroad. All
the following statistics are from the course 2005/2006.
Number of students
In the course 2006/2007 there are 1.440.000 students matriculated, that are a little
less than in the course 1995/1996 where there have been 1.500.000 students on spanish
universities. About two thirds of them are choosing the long cycle (ciclo largo)
and the others the short cycle (ciclo corto). Almost half of the students are studying
social and juristic sciences. Then 25 % of them are studying subjects of the tecnical
area. The rest of them is divided almost equally in the areas humanity, sciences
of health and experimental sciences. The number of graduates, which do doctorate
title, rised from 1995/1996 to 2005/2006 from 55.000 to 74.000. The region with
the most increase of students from 1995/1996 to 2005/2006 is Murcia, with almost
10%, followed by La Roja and Communidad de Valencia. The most decrease of students
has Navarra with almost 28% less students in the same timespan. The percentage of
the students, which pass the access-test of the university is at about 80%.
Percentage of women
In the course 2005/2006 54,3% of the students matriculated are women. That are more
than ten years before, where there only 52,7% students were female. The area with
the lower percentage of women is the technical area, were there are only 27% women.
But this rised in the last ten years by two percents, too. Also the women which
do the doctor title were in 2005/2006 for the first time more than the men.
Foreign students
The foreign students matriculated rised the last 10 years from 0,7% to almost 2%
of all students. Almost half of them come from Europe, followed by South America
(25%) and Africa (18%). Only 4% are coming from North America to study in spain.
To do the doctorate title in spain is even more popular. More than 20% of the Ph.D.
students are foreigners.
On the other side the spanish students, which participate in the ERASMUS programme
are increasing as-well. In the last 10 years the spanish students which went to
other countries to study rised from 10.000 to 20.000. However, since 2000 the students,
who enter spain to study are getting more than the spanish students, who leave the
country. The regions where the most spanish students leave there university to study
abroad, as-well as the most foreign students enter, are Madrid, Andalucia, Cataluña
and Valencia. It seems that if spanish students see foreign students at their university
they are animated to study abroad, too. The most popular countries for spanish students
are Italy followed by France and Great Britain and on fourth place Germany.
