History of Universities in Spain
The oldest university in spain is the University of Salamanca (Universidad de Salamanca),
which was founded in the year 1228. The university in Valladolid, founded in 1346
and the university un Barcelona, founded in 1450 are two other old universities
in spain. In the year of 1965 there have been 18 universities, in 1980 there have
been 30 and in the year 2000 there have been already 68. The number of students
raised from 170.000 (1960) to 1.600.000 in the year 2000. Right now there are 72
universities spread over the whole spanish country, from which 51 are public and
21 are private. The three cities with the most universities are Madrid with 13,
Barcelona with 8 and Valencia with 4.
Access to the University
To be able to enter a spanish university you have to have finished the Bachillerato.
But that's not enough to get into a university, because every university applies
a test which the future students have to pass. This test consists of common subjects
and two specific subjects, which can be choosen by the student. Every student can
repeat this test up to three times. After passing this test every student gets a
university access grade, which is combined by the grade of the Bachillerato and
the grade of this admission test. This grade is an important election criterion
for the access to a university or a study course.
Types of Universities
In spain there are mainly 3 different types of universities. The first ones are
the universidades (universitities). There are also escuelas tecnicas superiores
(technical universities). And finally escuelas universitarias, which are comparable
with the german Fachhochschulen.
Structure of the studying
The university courses are structured in cycles. They have the credit as a measure
for the lessons. There are three different models existing.
There are first cycle or short cycle courses (ciclo corto), which last mainly three
years. It can be accessed by pre-enrollment. At the end of this short cycle course
the student can obtain the titles Diplomado, Maestro, Arquitecto Tecnico or Ingeniero
Tecnico. This also allows to access to the second cycle.
Studies of two cycles with no intermediate title are taking four to five years.
If you finish these 2 cycles you can get the titles Licenciado, Arquitecto o Ingeniero.
The passing of the first cycle of this course don't result in getting any title.
But it allows to the incorporation into other studies of the second cycle.
There are studies of two cycles with intermediate title, too. After the first cycle
students can get the titles Diplomado, Ingeniero Tecnico o Arquitecto Tecnico. And
if they are going to continue the second cycle, they can obtain the titles Licenciado,
Ingeniero or Arquitecto. This type of studies normally takes from five to six years.
Studies of the third cycle can access only students which have the Licenciado, Ingeniero
or Arquitecto degree. But that's not the only precondition, that have to be fullfilled.
Every university regulates the access by the so called Doctorate Commission (Comision
de Doctorado). This third cycle normally takes two more years. And after it the
students gets the doctorate (Doctorado) title.
Costs
In general every student has to pay for going to university. But it's different
as in germany, where every student pays 500 Euros. In spain the students have to
pay depending on the subjects they choose, so for every subject they pay money.
That means that every student pays between 500 and 850 Euros every year, depending
on how many subjects he chooses. That means that every student, who don't pass the
exam at the end of a semester, has to pay again for this subject in the next semester.
This fairly arises ambition of most students. So that at the end of a study a student
paid between 2300 and 3200 Euros.
