Universidad Carlos III de Madrid
General Information
The university Carlos III was named after the Spanish king Carlos Tercero (or Charles the Third), who ruled Spain in the 18th century. In contrast to its name sponsor the UC3M is a very new university that was founded in 1989. It is a public university with 3 campuses in the three suburbs of Madrid Getafe (where the main campus is located), Leganés (the technical campus) and Colmenarejo in the Sierra de Guadarrama.
By this year about 17.000 students are studying at UC3M and are taught by about 1.200 lecturers. Furthermore there are about 400 staff members running the university.
A very interesting difference to German universities is the fact, that the universites
rector is elected by all members of the university. Since the students naturally
form the majority, this means that the rector is elected by the students. A result
of this is an election campaign where all candidates present there program and students
are able to learn to know there new "bosses".
Although this is a great opportunity for students to decide how the university is
going to look like in the future, only about 30 percent have voted in the last election.
