La Titulación - The Degree
At the UC3M computer science students can usually choose only very little. During
the first cycle (the first 3 years) nearly all courses are obligatory. Nevertheless
the student can decide what humanity course he is going to study and in this case
there is a broad choice - since all students at UC3M have to do this. Another speciality
is the need to study at least one English course. Since the English classes in the
Spanish school are not very efficient - a result of teaching English classes in
Spanish - most Spanish students only speak very little English. Although it might
be questionable if a single English course at university can solve this problem,
at least the UC3M seems to have recognized this problem.
And with the bilingual second cycle it also offers a much more efficient reaction.
Since the Spanish system is oriented more towards practice than towards theory, the general rule at UC3M is that 40 % of the workload should be practical work. This can be done in lab courses or / and projects in a company.
Although normally the Spanish system does not have any final project or thesis, the second cycle at UC3M includes a final project that is usually done at a company. Nevertheless it can not be compared with a master or even bachelor thesis at the TU Munich, because the approach is not so scientific but rather more hands-on.
The Second Cycle
In the second cycle the student can either study in English or in Spanish. Within the English cycle most courses are obligatory - again. But this basically depends on the little number of English courses available. If the students continues to study in Spanish - as most students do - he can choose between three different areas of specialization:
Development of information system in the company
(Desarrollo de sistemas de información en la empresa)
