The Public Universities:
Complutense
Founded in 1499
Students: 92.000
Autónoma
Founded in 1968
Students: 33.000
Politécnica
Founded in 1971
Students: 40.000
In the 70's the technical subjects were taken form the Complutense and la Politécnica
was found containing only these subjects.
Alcalá
Founded in 1977
Students: 23.000
Alcalá de Henares was actually the found place of La Complutense, which was
later moved to Madrid. Therefore the year 1977 does not indicate the founding of
the first Alcalá university, but of its current installment.
Carlos III
Founded in 1989
Students: 17.000
Rey Juan Carlos
Founded in 1996
Students: 18.000
Both Carlos III and Rey Juan Carlos have been built in the southern suburbs of Madrid to mix up these pure labor towns with academics. Actually a town called Villaverde, only a little bit North of Getafe, holds the record for the highest crime rate in whole of Spain. Unfortunately I don't have any numbers if the original plan worked out, but I can only notice that neither Leganés of Getafe are very nice places to live, although without the students the situation would probably be worse.
The Private Universities
Except for the old catholic Pontificia, all private universites have been founded within the last 15 years. Before the 90s they were simply not allowed. Today they only attract the rich crowd, since a student will have to pay e.g. about 3000 € per semester (at the Europea) to study at these universities. For the normal students these places have the air of "paying for the grade", although at least the facilites I have visited are of excellent quality.
