When looking around the campus in Garching or the campus Innenstadt you will hardly
find any sports facilities. While there are some outdoor fields in Garching, Campus
Innenstadt doesn't have anything.
Compared to Spanish universities this is a very uncommon sight. In Spain it doesn't
matter how big the campus is, practically everywhere you have access to impressive
sports facilities. At the UC3M the technical campus has its own gym and swimming
pool and tennis courts, while the main campus has also a gym and several courts
for various sports. Even the remote computer science of La Politécnica campus
comes with sport buildings that fill up half the campus.
So, do Spanish students play more sport than German students? In my opinion this
is not the case. I've never seen then facilities at UC3M completely occupied. Actually
it was normal during my weekly badminton session that we had a 20x40 metre hall
completely for ourselves. Although I did not further investigate on this, there
must be a law or at least some special money for building all these sports facilities.
When talking about sport one should also mention the typical sport called "padel". It is a mixture between tennis and squash and became very popular in Spanish speaking countries within the last 20 years. Nevertheless the most popular sports are the same as in Germany: football, tennis, formula 1, basketball, etc.
