Valencia - Fiestas
Spain is famous for its fiestas. There are several festivities distributed in the
whole year. The main fiesta in Valencia is Fallas, which is every year in march.
But there are many other official holiday, which the spanish people are celebrating.
Every region has some special holidays, where there are celebrated patrons of cities
or regions. In Alicante there is celebrated the Day of San Juan with many fireworks.
In spain the fiestas are celebrated with gorgeous fireworks, big and colorfull processions
and eating and drinking typical spanish food and drinks.
Sports
In Valencia there are two futball teams, which are playing in the first league (Primera
Division). The most known of them is the Valenica CF, which is almost every year
places in the first 6 teams of the first league. They play there home matches in
the Mestalla stadium, which has a capacity of arround 53000 people. But in few years
exactly in 2009 there will be a new multi-use stadium in which they were playing
there home matches. The second team of Valencia is Levante UD, which is playing
in a smaller stadium in the north of Valencia.
In the year 2007 there was the most famous and most prestigious regatta in the sport
of sailing, and the oldest active trophy in international sport, the America's Cup
was staged in Valencia. This was the 32th America's Cup and the second time that
it was situated in Europe. For this Cup the port has been rebuilt in Valencia and
some buildings have been built. The winner of the 32th America's Cup, Alinghi from
Switzerland decided that the 33th America's Cup will be held also in Valencia, Spain.
So that there will start the first races in the year 2009 again in the sea in front
of Valencia.
For the first time the highest class of auto racing, the Formula One will be held
in Valencia in the year 2008. There will be built a harbour-side street circuit,
like the one in Monaco. It will be in the easter part of the city near to the City
of Arts and Ciences. At the 24th of august the race will start for the first time
in the city of Valencia.
Fallas
Fallas is a valencian tradition, which celebrates the Saint Joseph's Day (Dia de
San Jose) 19th of march. It takes place from the 12th to the 19th of march every
year, but there are many days spread over the whole year, which prepare this party.
There is a rich explosion of colours, noise and gunpowder smell. Artisitc sculptures,
calles Fallas, which are made of board and other flammable materials are all around
the city. Everyone of these tells a satiric story. Music and people dressed with
typical costumes parade through the streets. Many of the streets in the city are
decorated with lights. Magnificent fireworks, together with ?Mascletás? (daytime
fireworks displays) and the flowers' gift to the Virgen de los Desamparados are
important events. The city is celebrating these days round the clock, the streets
are full of people the whole night and day. On the 19th of March, all the Fallas
are burnt whith great fireworks. The experience of this fiesta is unforgetable.
