Universidad Politecnica de Valencia - UPV
Universities in Valencia
In Valencia there are two bigger universities. The Universitat Politecnica de Valencia
and the Universitat de Valencia. As the name says the first one is a more tecnical
oriented university. The Universitat de Valencia offers 59 degrees, which include
teacher, languages, medicine, law and other subjects in the most social and economic
area. The Universitat de Valencia has three Campuses. These are Blasco Ibanez, where
the faculties, Medicine and Densistry, Psychology, Geography and History, Philosophy
and Educational Science, Philology, Translation and Communication, School of Nursing
and School of Physiotherapy are located, and Burjassot-Paterna, where you can find
the School of Enginnering and the faculties of Biological Sciences, Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, and Pharmacy and the Campus Tarongers, which includes the faculties
of Economics, Law and Social Sciences.
Campuses
The Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, which is a quite young institution, founded
in 1968-1969, is comprised of three campuses. The Alcoy Campus is situated in the
town Alcoy in the south of Valencia, in the province of Alicante. The Gandia Campus
is situated in the town of Gandia also in the south of Valencia and there is a nice
beach-side. The Campus Vera is the biggest one situated in the city of Valencia
itself. This campus is a really nice campus with a good infrastructure. There are
many green spaces with trees, where you can learn or read and there are cafeterias
all over the campus, where you can eat different food. There is also a doctor and
a hearcutter as-well as a bookstore and a bank. Of course there is one big library,
but there are also in some faculties small libraries, where you get the technical
literature of the according branch of study, and where you can learn and read in
it. And on the campus there is a big areal for all kind of sport activities, with
two small soccer fields with artificial gras and one big field with natural grass.
You can find also tennis courts and squash fields and much more.
Education and Campus Life
The education on the UPV is in three languages. The following explanation is refered
to the subjects of computer science, because the author participated in these personally.
All subjects are given in the valencian language and in the spanish language. And
some are even given in english. So that every student can attend the subjects in
his prefered language. Most of the subjects have theorectical and practical classes,
where the theoretical classes are given in normal teaching rooms with about 30 to
80 places and the practical classes are mostly given in computer rooms in smaller
groups of 15 to 30 students. So that all the acquired knowledge is being practised
in exercises. In some of the subjects there are also homeworks which have to be
done until a certain deadline. The final grade is achieved in different ways depending
on the subject. In most cases there is a final exam, but in many of them there are
also some homeworks (trabajo) which have to be handed in to participate on the final
exam. In some cases the final-exam is replaced by a final work, which mostly is
done in groups of 2 or 3 people.
The campus life is different than at german universities. The students are more
living at the university, and therefore they have all the things you need to life,
like doctor and hairdresser and so on. There are many places to do sports and other
free-time activities. At the UPV for example there is a Casa De Alumnos (House of
the students), which is a buidling where there are sofas and TVs to relax and watch
films and also a pool table and tables to play tabletop soccer. In this house there
are also computerrooms where you can play games, but also quiet rooms to read or
to learn. The sport activity programm at the UPV is enormous. There are excellent
sport facilities like the indoor swimming pool, football and rugby pitches, five-a-side
football, three basketball courts, four tennis courts, two racket ball courts and
two squash courts. There is the possibility to play handball, volleyball and table
tennis. In most team sports there are campus leagues in which you can compete with
other students. Also martial arts like Tae Kwon-do, Karate, Judo, Aikido can be
learned and trained. To keep fit there is a gym for weight training and some courses
of Aerobics, Step, Rithms and Aerobox. You can also join sailing courses and motor
boating as-well as diving or climbing.
Language Course in Gandia
The Language Course in Gandia is a special offer for the exchange students and is
provided before every semester. In this 2 weeks long language course you can learn
the spanish language in courses depending on your spanish-level, from beginner to
advanced. The groups are not to big, from 20 to 30 people. Most of the teachers
don't speak english. But that's not a disadvantage but helpful to learn the language
really fast. With this language course there are offered appartments, where you
live with other exchange students between the beach and the campus. The beach in
Gandia is really nice, the water is clear and a good place to go swimming and doing
other watersport activities. In this course which is held in the morning, between
9 and 13 o'clock there is also offered a sports programm on the afternoon. The most
recommendable activity there is the wind surfing course. This course is advisable
for all exchange students, because you learn the language from a native speaker
and you meet many young people from different countries, which you will remember
and see the whole stay of your abroad study. Also the beach there is great, if you
come home at 13 from the course you come home and eat doing the homework and than
you can enjoy the day on the beach, lying in the sand and learning words or just
enjoying the nice sea and go swimming.
